Desktop Support / Problems

In this section of the help desk, we will address many frequently asked questions regarding basic computer support and problems. You are welcome to call us at 860-987-6200 at any time if you are in need of further assistance.

Q: My computer is turned on, but my mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc. is not working or responding properly.

A: This can be a complicated process, follow these steps in order to solve this problem on your own.

1.Make sure all components of your computer are completely connected to one another, and make sure that all cords for all peripheral items (mouse, keyboard) are in the right plug on the back of your CPU (computer box). If your plugs do not have labels that tell you which device (mouse keyboard, monitor etc) is supposed to go where, try looking at the shape of the end of the device’s wire, and look at the shape of the plug on the back of the CPU. If you can easily match the end of the cord to the plug on the back of the CPU, gently and slowly try placing the end of the cord into the plug. If the end of the cord does not easily fit into the plug, DO NOT push hard and DO NOT force the object in; doing so might bend the wires on the end of the cord. If you have placed all of the wires into all of their respective plugs, then reboot your machine (a reboot consists of turning the power off, and then on again). If this does not solve the problem you can either call us at 860-987-6200, or move on to step number 2.

2.Make sure all of the necessary driver files are installed properly onto your computer. A driver file is program that controls a device. Every device, whether it is a printer, disk drive, or keyboard, must have a driver program. Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you connect the device to your computer. In Windows environments, drivers often have a.DRV extension. A driver acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver knows. So it is very important for all of the proper drivers to be installed for all of your devices in order for them to function correctly. If you have a system back up disc or CD, try placing it into your computer and finding the correct driver file off of the disc for the device that is not working. If you have access to the Internet, you might also want to go to the website of the device that is not functioning in order to download the driver you need (e.g. if your mouse is made by the Logitech company, and it is not working, try visiting the Logitech website and download the proper driver). If you are not comfortable doing this, or you need further assistance, feel free to call for assistance at 860-987-6200.

If you have followed both sets of these directions, and the device(s) are still not working, please call at 860-987-6200 or bring your computer down to the TrinfoCafe.

Q: When I open Internet Explorer, or Netscape navigator, I receive an error message and I cannot surf the web.

A: Make sure you are connected to the Internet. It is important to remember that you MUST always connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) first in order to be able to do anything on-line. If you are connected to your ISP and your browser is still not allowing you to view web pages make sure that all of your DIAL UP settings are properly configured. Be sure to call your ISP and go over how your computer should be properly set up. If you are using TrinfoCafe as your ISP, you can refer to the Dial up for Windows 95 or 98 links on the left hand menu.

If you cannot successfully connect to your ISP even after receiving the proper instructions from your ISP, you might have a problem with your modem, in which case you should contact the manufacturer of your modem immediately.

Q: When I start up my computer I receive an error that says: non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready.

A: you most likely have a disk inserted in your A: (floppy disk drive), if you eject the disk and press any button, your computer will boot normally.

Q: I press the power button on my monitor, but my computer does not start up.
A: In order for your computer to start up , you must press both the power button for the monitor and the power button on the CPU (computer box). When both buttons are pressed, your computer will be fully functional. If you have pressed both the monitor power, and the CPU power and still nothing is showing up, make sure that you monitor is completely and securely connected to the back of your CPU.
