How to set up your TrinfoCafe dial-up account using Windows 98

 

To begin installing dial-up support, double click on the icon of your computer at the top left side of the desktop screen. By default this is called "My Computer", but users often rename it. We'll refer to it for the rest of this document as "My Computer". In the "My Computer" window, look for an icon called Dial-Up Networking.

If Dial-Up Networking does not appear in the "My Computer" window:

  1. In the "My Computer" window, double click on Control Panels.
  2. From the Control Panels window, double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select the index tab marked Windows Setup.
  4. Click the checkbox next to Communications.
  5. Click OK at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Close the Control Panel.
  7. Reboot your computer. You may be prompted for your "Windows '98 username". Please respond with your dial-in username and password.
  8. Dial-Up Networking should now appear in your "My Computer" window.

B. Installing the Network Protocol

  1. From within the "My Computer" window, double click on Control Panels.
  2. From the Control Panels window, double click on Network.

  1. In the blank box marked "Computer Description:" enter your name.
  2. Towards the top of the Network window, click the tab marked "Configuration".
  3. Click the button marked "Add..."
  4. At the next window ("Select Network Component Type"), click the word "Protocol", and then click the "Add..." button.

  1. At the following window (called "Select Network Protocol"), click "Microsoft" from the list of manufacturers on the left side of the screen, and then click "TCP/IP" from the list of protocols at the right side of the screen. With these two selected, click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window. Follow any on-screen instructions to complete installation of the Microsoft TCP/IP component.

Once completed you will have to restart your computer.


B. Setting up the Client

  1. From within the "My Computer" window, double click on Control Panels.
  2. From the Control Panels window, double click on Network.

  3. From the Network Control Panel, click on the component named Client for Microsoft Networks. When "Client for Microsoft Networks" is highlighted click on the Properties button.

  4. From the Client for Microsoft Networks window, make sure the check box named Logon on to Windows NT domain is not checked.
  5. Leave the text box named Windows NT Domain blank. 
  6. Within the Network logon options section, select Quick logon
  7. Click OK.

When you have completed these changes, click OK at the bottom of the Network Control Panel and your will once again have to restart your computer..


D. Configuring Dial-Up Networking

  1. From within the "My Computer" window, double click on Dial-Up Networking. A window entitled Make New Connection now appears.

  2. In the top box, type a name for your connection to Trinity (ex, "Trinity Connection 1").
  3. In the box underneath the "Select a modem:" prompt, you should see the type of modem you have connected (ex., "US Robotics Sportster 28000"). If the name does not appear, click the downward pointing triangle next to the text box and select it from the list.

If your modem type does not appear in the box or on the list:

    • a. Click the Cancel button at the bottom of the window.
      b. Double click once again on "My Computer".
      c. Once in the "My Computer" window, double click on Control Panels.
      d. From the Control Panels window, double click on Modems, and then select Add.
      e. Follow the screen prompts. This will "inform" Windows '98 about your modem.
      f. Return to the beginning of this section, and double-click on Dial-Up Networking.

  1. Click the Next> button at the bottom of the window.

  1. At the next screen, under Area Code enter 860 and then in the next box enter the telephone number given to you when you acquired your dial-in account (ex., 2978321). Click the Next> button at the bottom of the window.
  2. Click the Finish button. This saves a copy of the "dial up connection", as Microsoft calls it, in the Dial-Up Networking folder. (GRAPHIC OF saving a connection)
  3. From within the "My Computer" window, double click on Dial-Up Networking.

  4. Next, click on the right mouse button so that a drop down menu appears and choose Properties

  5. Click on the the tab labeled Server Types.

  6. Uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible, but make sure TCP/IP remains checked. After this is done, click on TCP/IP Settings...
    Check "TCP/IP" and click "TCP/IP Settings"
  7. Make sure your settings read as follows:

1.      Make sure Server assigned IP address is clicked.

2.      Make sure Specify name server addresses is clicked.In the fields next to each item, make sure the following are entered in properly:

      • Primary DNS: 157.252.10.251
      • Secondary DNS: 157.252.10.252
      • Primary WINS: 157.252.10.165
      • Secondary WINS: 157.252.4.5

3.      Make sure Use IP header compression is checked.

4.      Make sure Use default gateway on remote network is checked.

5.      Click OK.

  1. Click OK again and your dial-in connection is configured to Trinity specifications!

Using the Dial-Up Connection

You are now ready to use the dial-up connection.

  1. Again locate the "My Computer" icon (or to whatever you renamed it). From within the "My Computer" window, double click on Dial-Up Networking.

  1. Double click on the connection you created earlier. You'll see something like this:

  1. Enter your dial-in user name and password, verify that the phone number is correct, and then click Connect.
  2. Eventually, you'll see this dialog box

and an icon in the system tray will appear that looks like this:  systray_icon.gif (936 bytes).

  1. When you are done with your dial-up connection, click the Disconnect button.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter problems while trying to connect, write down the exact text of any error messages and contact the TrinfoCafe at 860-297-2381. Please try to be as precise as possible in describing problems. Also, if you feel that you can fix the problem yourself, always try looking through the help windows and look through the Windows help system.
